Community Impact:
Utah’s reading proficiency is in critical decline. In 2024, only 31% of Utah’s 8th graders met reading benchmarks, and fewer than half of students in grades 1–3 were on track. At the same time, Spanish-speaking communities—who make up a growing portion of the state—remain underrepresented in arts programming and face barriers to culturally affirming education and public arts access.
This Bookfair responds to both challenges:

It promotes early and lifelong reading habits through joyful, family-friendly programming

It connects Spanish-speaking families to their linguistic and cultural roots through books, poems, and shared storytelling

It fosters pride, visibility, and representation for bilingual and immigrant communities

It engages educators and local institutions in collaborative literacy efforts

It empowers first- and second-generation youth to embrace their identities through the literary arts
